We have so many projects on the table that we need to create some type of coding system to identify each project. Does anyone have any suggestions?

We use sequential job codes, we have a database of Jobs which can be 'signed out' by only two people the organization (avoiding duplicates & conflicts).

It's a simple and easy to use system (KISS).

We have used 'cost centers' on our financial system for this purpose. This is especially powerfull when running multiple projects that require financial reporting.

One can also go one step further, and customise ones project WBS to start with this coding, simplifying reporting from databases.

It is a good idea to use the nature of each project and categorise them accordingly. We had a mega project which was developing an island, therefore; the codes were allocated based on construction of the buildings or infrastructure including roads and utilities, etc... and then divided to sub-projects to address each projects easily.
