As project progresses, we can foresee necessity to incorporate changes as more information is available. Change is inevitable but changes affect project schedule, project cost and even project quality. What are your thoughts on effective change management? Saving Changes...
Effective change management starts with effective change management planning. If the change management plan and change management processes are right-sized for the complexity and criticality of the project and if stakeholders are disciplined about following the approved process, then the risk of unmanaged change or the costs of overly heavy change management processes can be reduced.

Change management must be implemented as a component inside Configuration Management. Is the only way to be successful. Saving Changes...

Sergio,
Thank you. Would you give an example?

Nandkishor ~ Here is a rough analogy of what I think Sergio is saying using chess:
Consider configuration control like playing a game of chess where you command but don't directly touch the pieces. All the pieces on the board are in defined positions, and you have a record of all positions at each move. (Configuration Identification)
You can only move your own pieces when it is your turn and each piece has rules for how it can move. (Configuration Management or Control and Status Accounting per the PMBOK)
After your move, you can then verify that the new position is correct according to what you said to do, and go back and check that all commands were correctly executed at each move. (Verification and Audit)
What good is it how well you define how the pieces move, if you can't really say where you started or finished? Configuration management is the game of chess. Change management is moving pieces. Saving Changes...

Impossible to give a better example than stated by @Keith above (Chapeu Mr Novak!). Just trying to adding something the key reason for getting project change management in place is to evaluate the impact each change will create at the whole project and, mostly forgotten, at program/portfolio. Configuration Management is the key to do that. Saving Changes...

The basic rule of effective change management process is to understand the scope like back of your hand and analyse what is captured on paper as well as predict what is not captured on paper with respect to scope. Effective change management may give rise to better unconventional ways for managing a project which were not tried before. Trivial changes should be avoided, but few unique changes which catch our eye with respect to better project execution should be welcomed. Saving Changes...
It is a broad question. You may need to refer to PMBOK for some guidelines. Generally, the most important thing in change management is associated with new/previous client requirements, cost, schedule, resource, etc. That is why the change management process is important. Saving Changes...
