Any experience of a truly Agile project in terms of contracts?

This one of the 4 Agile values but I wonder how feasible is to have a project without any signed contract. Dis anyone delivered a project involving an external client without having a contract defining the obligations?

It can be done as a T&M engagement but I am interested in a real undocumented commitment to deliver scope in a certain time-frame at an agreed cost.
