i am struggling with getting first job related to project management. i really want to enter this industry and my background is in telecommunications.

I have already booked CAPM exam in 2 weeks and have completed availible papers at Uni during graduate dimploma in business course which I did this year: I have taken PM and Issues in PM apart from other papers.

But here in NZ everyone is asking for at least 2-3 years of proven PM experience, whereas I have only engineering - last position held before studies was senior engineer role at one of the telco providers back home in Moscow..

I have joined PMI and going to volunteer for the local chapter, but it seems to be not so resultful so far..

Getting the first job in any field is always hard. However, if you are doing engineering, you may need to shift the focus of your resume to highlight your project management activities. PMs in IT and telecommunications usually get started as engineers because they need to understand the work they are managing and they need to have the communications and customer-relations skills to motivate and manage their team and to work effectively with their customers. Furthermore, PMs need to understand the big picture context of their projects as well as enough of the details to know if the project is on track or in trouble.

Thanks Robert, would it be possible to give some feedback on my CV if I post the draft here?

Personally, I would be happy to give feedback on anyone's CV. My advice is to post it on your Gantthead profile, and then post a message on the message boards with your question.

Good luck with the career change, and feel free to contact me personally. If others have the same question, jump in. I am happy to help anyone.
