Hoping to get some recommendations from the experts here. I am not a project manager and do not work on any projects as PM. I work intensely with OPPM as PfMg/Super User and previously managed other Oracle PPM software. I assist and follow up with PMs to ensure they update their projects to facilitate proper project portfolio reporting. Given that background, I would like to obtain a certification in PPM. In view that I won't have PM hours, any recommendations on what's out there for me?

Lavaughn, You can prepare and take the CAPM (certified associate in project management) test. This will get you a certificate that will show your knowledge in project management . You will need to first take a course online or some other schooling to qualify enough hours to take this test. You can find courses all over for this including on the PMI site , Udemy , Linkedin as well as other places.From what i have read i believe it is the same test without having the hands on experience. I am currently studying for this test . Although I do have some project management experiences I do not believe they are enough for me to take the PMP test. Best of luck on your journey and answer.I am new to this journey as well and hope my information helps you out. Take care- Keith

I think CAPM is the best option to go

For those who are interested in Project Management certification but not having the PM Experience which is eligibility criteria for PMP exam, CAPM is the alternative.

Lavaughn, there are many books on project management and also cheap courses you can start on UDEMY courses very cheap and can give you initial knowledge to build on gradually
I am in favor of increasing your basic knowledge before you attempt to do credentials you need to gain hours on projects therefore better to start reading and gain exposure first.

Take a closer look to requirements to get the certification. As far as I know you do not have to have ours managing projects. You have to have hours working in projects which is not the same.

Well, PMP criteria say "*Leading and directing the project as identified with the tasks, knowledge, and skills specific in the Project Management Professional Examination Content Outline."

Besides learning about project processes and techniques, you could also look at your leadership skills, which is a life-long learning anyhow. Start with understanding and improving your emotional intelligence or signing up at toastmasters for the leadership path.

For project management language, try out https://edge.pmi.org/
For CAPM, look at https://learning.pmi.org/online-course/883...i-online-course - this course prepares for CAPM (and yes, there are others too)

Hi Lavaughn,

I would recommend you to define what your career path is or what you want to do.

For Project Management as long as you have the hours requested you can apply for them.
* https://www.pmi.org/certifications/types/certified-associate-capm
* https://www.pmi.org/certifications/types/project-management-pmp

Although for your current role you might be interested on:
* https://www.pmi.org/certifications/types/p...management-pfmp

This certification is the same I'm pursuing now

As far as I know, there's no dependency between them.

I appreciate all the response offered. I took it for granted that everyone would see that I already have the CAPM certification. That is actually how I have found my way into PMI and this platform.
So to be clear, I do not do project work. I am into portfolio management. I am trying to explore if there are any portfolio management certification that do not require project hours as a criteria.

Hi Lavauhgn,

As I commented you, PfMP only requires Portfolio Management Experience.

Different from PgMP, where you actually need experience managing Projects and Programs.

Sent me an email: [email protected] and we can work together towards the certification.

And I will take advantage to extend the invitation to everyone interested on prepare for this certification.

Best regards

It'll be a while before I can reach out for PfMP so is there a fundamental or mid-level certification I can reach out for?
