I'd like to know how you prepare to walk into a new PM job on the first day. What do you bring with you? And I mean both in your bag or your backpack, and in your head. Saving Changes...

Interesting question.
whats in head is more important than whats in bag/backpack.

I do what in the field of business analysis (to name a reference) is calling Elicitation. Mainly I spend my time in the activity called "Prepare for Elicitation". To do that I use the Zachman Framework row one as a guide and I use tools like PESTLE, Porter Five Forces, SPIN Selling, to complete all related to Zachman´s Framework row one following the CMU SEI process to execute "Prepare for elicitation". In my bag would be a notepad, pen and a pack of gum. Everything else is subject to the onboarding efficiency of my new client or employer!
In my head I will be remembering what I'd heard during the interview process, especially the desired short term objectives for the role, but my "swing thought" will be to keep an open mind.

This is a timely question for me as well, Larry. I'm going to second Kiron in that I would also bring a notepad and pen, but in my case I would bring a roll of mints since I don't like gum.
I would bring in my head a reminder to listen well, observe, and ask questions to make the best impression possible. Saving Changes...

I prepare by knowing the first day is probably the easiest day I'm ever going to have, so enjoy it. In my bag is just enough to not have to ask for anything. I want to have everything covered. I even have my passport though I have no good reason why. In my head is, as Glenn has said, I want to listen, watch and ask questions if I'm in a position to. One thing I've always had to remind myself of was to have patience. That the snapshot of day one, three or ten will change and my position in the mix will become a lot more clear as time passes. I've always thought there was a psychology to that first day. Saving Changes...

Excellent question! The first thing I would like to do is to gather a lot of info on the company and the project. Prepare a list of questions and refer them to the info I've found, if possible. Then I would bring a notepad, a pen, my notebook and a snack! That's it! Saving Changes...
