This depends on a lot of factors including the scale or complexity of the project whose information you wish to manage, organization technology standards, and budget. Primavera made their name in the construction & engineering space whereas MS Project started as more of a small project management tool.
MS Project is good for small projects and/or small organisations, but as things grow Primavera's portfolio management features become increasingly important.
1 project- use MS Project. 100 projects- use Primavera Saving Changes...
MS Project is more suitable for independent projects , smaller corporations with less projects structure and projects that are largely dependent on external resources.
But it is very easy to use.
On other hand ,Primavera is more suited for a multi-user, large corporate project structure, particularly where most projects are part of a larger project, or an ongoing corporate management strategy that integrates projects in a networked system, particularly with a lot of shared resources.
So it is depends on your requirement. If you are going to manage only 1 project , in this case , MS Project is good option.
If you are going to manage the project which is the part of other Large Project , Primavera is good option.

I believe PMs should however be proficient on both MS project and Promevera
What is the kind (Industry) of the project? What size the project?
How many planners do you expect to have? one a large team
What is the client requirement? do you need to provide an electronic version of the planning to the client?
Your budget and infrastructure may have an influence.
Can you get training on both?
I have used both according to need. Saving Changes...

The selection of the tool depends on the requirements of the project. For complex projects Primavera is a better application. It is very powerful. It you have complex dependencies and multiple subsystems to link, Primavera is a better tool. We have linked our time sheets into our Primavera models. MS Project is great for a simpler project which does not contain a lot of branches and inter-dependencies. Unfortunately, the answer to your question is "it depends". :-( Saving Changes...

In my opinion, MS Project is easier, mostly because it has that Office visual template we are already accostumed with. Primavera is more powerful, handling well schedules with 10 thousand or more lines. It all depends on your use, really. It doesn't help to have an easy to use tool with an untractable schedule, or an amazing resourceful tool that you can't interface with.
Thank you. Saving Changes...

There are of course other project management softwares available and some are open source.. anyway as pointed out by the experts above, it depends on the type of project. For the beginners both will feel the same.. Saving Changes...
