Hi shadav,
Story telling is one of the way to motivate people. It is very very old way to motivate people. Defining purpose behind their work and showing Big picture and how their work are linked with project objective is very important. Set the small target and celebrate the achievement is critical to keep project team motivated. Supporting, guiding project team and clear their obstacles on regular basis also help them to feel motivated for purpose. Timely decision making also plays important role for team motivation. Keeping yourself closer to your project team is another team motivation booster. All the best!!

Shadav -

you can't motivate people, but you can inspire them. Read Daniel Pink's book Drive to get some of his insights on the importance of autonomy, mastery & purpose. As PMs, we have the ability to help with each of those.

Hi Shadav,

great question. Those who have answers to it are great leaders.

How to become a great leader?
Start working on yourself, and strive to influence others in an ethical way.
Improving your Emotional Intelligence is a good way to begin this lifelong journey. Getting a mentor, extending your network are others.

Leadership is about influence. Great leaders themselves know the way and are able to communicate this vision to the team. When your team gets the buy-in to the greater vision, they are inspired and motivated to get to work on that big vision whether or not the leader is watching them.
What you should strive for as a team lead is getting your team to buy in to the bigger picture and they will stay motivated

You can best motivate or inspire people through your personal example. For example, if I want my team members to give their best effort, then they must first see me giving my best.
Rarely have I seen mere words motivate anyone. Words are easy to say, and anyone can do it. Actions are much more 'real' in most people's eyes.

I was going through the answer chain and could not stop myself responding to your question Shadav.
Keeping the team motivated is a very important factor delivering high quality deliverable within timelines. How to keep them motivated?
1. Do not micromanage. Let the team feel responsible and provide proper goals.
2. Invite input, suggestions and foster team collaboration.
3. Show each how they are valued and important. Pay people what they are worth. Money cannot be only factor to keep one motivated.
4. Good work environment

I think the real motivation only comes when someone is doing the work he/she enjoys or even is passionate about. Also financial gains do play a major part in motivation and for some people this is even more important than doing an enjoyable work.

So in my opinion the best way to motivate an employee is to give him the type of work he enjoys and also give him the pay he thinks he deserves for his work.

Of course there are also means but I think the two mentioned above are the most important. I don't think there is someone more motivated to do a work than the person that is passionate about that work.

Hello Shadav: These are some ideas on this topic - Show the team what's in it for them, why they should participate in the project and why their expertise is so valuable to the success of the project, acknowledge their accomplishments, support your team, be an excellent communicator, infuse happiness and fun in your work and interactions if you can while still remaining professional, make the project as enjoyable as possible.

I witnessed and also experienced with this and I agree with you that high salary could solve nearly 80% of issues related to human resource.

Individuals can certainly be motivated through incentives, i.e. monetary rewards, or candy :) though, motivation is fleeting / temporary.

But it is leadership and culture, coupled with true passion that will light the fire of inspiration - leading to the effect of motivation. And, even so, if that inspiration and resulting passion and initiative in their work is not recognized and rewarded, they will find it elsewhere. Stoke the fire.
