How relevant is the Maslow Heirarchy for the under 25 and the new workforce joining in.
They consider freedom, passion, creativity / innovate as a must have. Are they patient enough to recieve self actualilzation or do they start with self actualization

Hi Anu,
Maslow's hierarchy of needs is a theory in psychology proposed by Abraham Maslow in his 1943 paper .This theory is a key foundation in understanding how drive and motivation are correlated when discussing human behavior.

But now time has been changed. When people are self-motivated because they are given the freedom to do the work they enjoy, This behavior is increasingly common in modern workplaces, where routine work is often outsourced. In these kinds of environments, innovation and creativity are key. It is known as Intrinsic motivation.

According to Daniel Pink , Intrinsic motivation is based on three key factors: Autonomy, Mastery and Purpose.

Nothing changed. All that people under 25 wishes is exactly the same than people in ´60 wishes. It has no sense talk about X/Centinials/Milenials/somethingenials. On the other side, Maslow is still active. Too much today due to most of the world live inside "The Matrix". When you analyze the actual world you will easy understand how much Maslow is used by people that need to have the power.

Still the same. They may be at a higher level of the hierarchy.

Anu -

Maslow's hierarchy is a model and as such it attempts to bring meaning to or simplify complex situations - in some cases, it fits well, and less so in others. If you look at more modern theories on motivation (e.g. Pink, Lencioni, Sinek), you'll see that they can all relate to one or more levels of Maslow's hierarchy.

Regardless of the age of a worker, the importance of security & belonging will apply but may just need to be adapted (e.g. psychological safety instead of physical safety).

Anu, I agree with Kiron.
We can learn a lot of models about reality, and we have to be able to understand how each model can help us understand reality better.
Models also help us to communicate with others and share perspectives.

Anu, another thought:

Is VUCA really a new thing, or have humans always been unsecure, afraid, surprised etc., even with greater impacts? Is it even a generational thing?

The Incas were conquered by the Spaniards within 30 years after Columbus landed, the people in Pompeii were killed within hours, WW II killed 60+ million within 6 years. This all was volatile, uncertain, complex (beyond comprehension) and ambiguous for the individuals involved.

I would agree that it is still relevant. Very little about the human psyche has changed. We might have different motivations/drivers for our needs from our parents, as they had from theirs, but in the end, it comes down to the same thing.

The key message from Maslow's hierarchy of needs is that if you want to motivate someone, you need to motivate with something from the right level.

If a millennial has everything in the first basic levels, he/she might be interested in a doctorate degree, but take away the lowest, most basic level, say "food" and they are back there again so that a banana motivates them more than a title.

The more VUCA the world, the faster you go from title to banana.
