You are in a workshop with the client. The objective of the workshop is to prioritize scope for the first release. Since this is a prestigious project, each client stakeholder wants his/her scope items to be included in the first release. What advice would you give the client stakeholders?

First, I'd advise the client to rank the scope items by their functional value and/or the profit they'll bring to the organization. If all the scope items contribute approximately equal functional and profit value, then simply let each stakeholder contribute an equal number of items to the first release.

Before getting to scope alignment, it is important that stakeholders are aligned towards the project vision. Once that is accomplished, then an objective prioritization or evaluation method could be considered or something more simple like dot voting depending on the audience and the complexity of the project.

generally, each stakeholder seeks his/her own priorities. That is why you need to define the project goals, values and needs. Based on what we expect from the project and limitations, prioritization can be done.
