I am looking to see what training you have taken to help understand how to build out portfolio management from the ground up. Knowing there are many reasons why to build out portfolio management and many ways to implement, I want to make sure it is done right the first time.

For those who have been tasked with building an enterprise portfolio management, where did you start? How did you determine your roadmap? Did you work with anyone externally to get a recommendation? What training did you take to make sure you were setup for success?

Christopher -

I'd suggest reviewing PMI's standard on portfolio management and then review Dr. Edgett & Cooper's book on product portfolio management & the book Agile Portfolio Management to get a good foundation on concepts and practices.

Then, I would suggest working with your leadership team to help them make some key decisions such as:

1. How do we define a project?

2. What criteria are important to us when prioritizing?

3. Who gets to approve a project and what thresholds apply?

Only look at tooling once you've got your governance model and processes nailed down. And yes, a reliable external consultant might help...
