Thousands of you can probably answer this, but I am stuck.
For now, I am building a high-level plan in which I want to assign timeframes and staff to a task. But, right now, I am not concerned with hours, and I would like to just leave hours off. But, everytime I assign a resource, Project will calculate hours based on dates. Is there a way I can stop that? Saving Changes...

My apologies. You can also go to select all tasks - upper left cell in worksheet. Project/task information/advanced tab/
From there, click off estimated, click off effort driven, under contraints highlight fixed work.
Finally, the best and easiest way is to just hide the work column - ha ha Saving Changes...

Hi Dennis,
Michael is on the right lines, but from the advanced tab uncheck the Effort Driven option and select Fixed Duration from the task type drop-down menu.
In this particular instance I would also advise setting the default task type to Fixed Duration and unchecking the new tasks are effort driven option. (Tools > Options > Schedule)
This will guarantee the dates remain static even if you add new tasks to the schedule.
Instead of the Resource Names / Initials columns, I often use Text1 during the initial planning phase. You can still show the resource names as task information on the Gantt to remind you who’ll be assigned to the task. (Just use the Gantt Chart Wizard)
Then when you’re then ready to assign resources you can cut and paste into the resource name column. (As long as you remember to correctly set Fixed Duration / Effort Driven first!!)

Maybe I misunderstand the question. Do you want to hide the hours column? Do you want to show duration rather than work? Duration hours can be defined as the unit of measure from the task start to the task finish, regardless of resources. Work hours is the amount of total effort for a given task, which will increase as you assign resources ( i.e. man-months) to a project task. If you only want a resource assigned to a specific task name and don't care about the length of the task, I suggest you use a milestone task. Again, maybe I misunderstand the question.
