Who's the best of the best? What are everyone's experiences? I'm beginning the research for a new project management tool and I want to know what applications to look at.

Without knowing your requirements, it's really tough to say who is the "best." How large a group do you have? How many projects? What is your technical environment? We're using PlanView which is one of several "Enterprise" level resource and project management tools. Of the packages that size, they tend to be one which focuses on resource planning as its core "theme." I'd suggest you take a look at the PMI bookstore - you can get a copy of their software survey published each year which provides great deal on hundreds of products Saving Changes...
If you are doing software development and have EVMS reporting requirements then Primavera is a sound choice. Primavera will cost you $16K for a development team of 30 people. Another choice is Microsoft Project 2000 combined with MS Access 2000 and ControlPanel for graphical status views. Microsoft solution will cost you $1K. We use both solutions very effectively. Hmmm, I'll try to narrow it down a bit. Our division of Teradyne (TCS) has over 3000 employees right now. The eventual role out would most likely only be for OUR building of 2000 or so employees. Of course the firt role out would only be for certain managers, engineers, and line managers.
This software will be for multiple groups with many different projects ongoing. It must be able to handle MANY projects and resources at once.
As far as technical environment. We're an Oracle shop running NT servers and workstations. We just finished installing a data warehouse, which might be used with the Project Management Software. Much of the requirements are still undetermined.
I would appreciate any words on different applications. Experiences with them, and recommendations.
Many thanks!!!

Given that environment, it sounds like you'd be looking at a larger Enterprise-type package. PlanView, like many others, is suited to that very environment. We run it under Oracle and use an NT server as our application server. Other packages of that size would include Primavera or Artemis. MSProject 2000 / Project Central would be far too limiting given over 2000 project managers with multiple projects. Our environment has roughly 1,200 projects across a dispersed geographic area, and involves roughly 2,000+ resources. Feel free to drop an E-mail at [email protected] for more information.
