Unrealistic Deadlines

The second reason why most projects fail or what most project managers and project members struggle is with the unrealistic expectations clients and stakeholders have from them. Most project timelines do eventually slip due to the unrealistic ‘initial deadlines’.

As we live in a world, where competition is getting aggressive and targets are set either unrealistic or achievable rather than driven by calculated business requirements. From then, what begins is a desperate attempt where the team tries to fit the requirements in the already drawn boundaries.

Reza,

In my experience, the most important element in confronting "unrealistic deadlines" is to NOT accept requirements that have ambiguity. Accepting ambiguous content might get you the contract, but it will undermine one’s credibility and standing regardless of the existence of, or degree of, disclaimers.

Change management is also a critical item in this area, as you can dot every "I" and cross every "T" in the requirements gathering process but still end up with unrealistic deadlines due to uncontrolled change. I have been dealing with this subject for almost 40 years and have learned to apply a bit of humor on this topic:

A little Humor:

Deadlines do not get the respect they deserve, so be sure to salute them as they pass you by!

Deadlines were originally created to be respected as one would face bodily harm if they were crossed. However, the term has lost significance and respect over time. Recognize that they have an extremely difficult job, as they spend their entire existence monitoring the activities related to their task. And all they ask in return is that we give them the respect they deserve. Their biggest complaint is "why did you create me as a milestone if you intended to ignore my existence?" I agree they are a bit sensitive, but we should never forget they are there for our success. So give them the respect they deserve and salute them as they pass you by.
