As we know that we can not do everything on our own. How much is important for Project Manager to know how to delegate the tasks.

A PM is the conductor of the orchestra and not the person playing every instrument hence effective delegation is critical.

Management is the art of doing things using the others. It means having the others do s.th. Proper delegation strategies are very important.

Delegate all the work that you think others can do better than yourself.. Take only the ones u think you are best in at..

I think the term delegation is often misunderstood. In my opinion delegation is when someone has both the ability and the responsibility to perform a task but chooses to ask someone else to do it on his/her behalf.

PMs are not responsible for performing the tasks required to complete the project and many times they don't even have the ability to perform them. As such the work performed by the project team members is not delegated by the PM.

For example in a software development project the PM, as a general rule, is not responsible for developing the software and many times he does not even have the knowledge to do this. The responsibility of the PM is to ensure that the tasks are assigned and taken care of, this however is not delegation.

The project team member does not perform the work on behalf of the PM. The responsibility for the actual work is that of the team members and not the PM.

Delegation is only when the PM asks team members to perform purely project management tasks. This however is not a very good idea since the team member would not be doing actual work while he does project management work. So in my opinion delegation in project management is not a very good idea unless there are also junior project management specialist on the project team.
