Motivation is one way to influence, there are many more, e.g.
- inspiration
- coercing
- group pressure
- persistence
- convincing
- politics / tradeoffs

The final goal of leadership is influencing others, as a prerequisite you need to be self-aware, self-controlled and empathetic. This all is called emotional intelligence.

Motivation is less powerful and short-sighted, but also a influencing technique.

Thank-you. But influence can be like i am making use of others idea or suggestions to achieve my goal. Does this is correct?

motivation is a kind of positive influence. Influence can be negative as well. You may negatively influence others. for example, you may demotivate them.

Lenin, influence should be exercised in an ethical way, not at the expense of others. Like children being raised by good parents.
If not, we see things like fake news, mind-washing, lying etc. - the fact is influencing techniques are there and get better. Unluckily they are used mostly by the bad guys.

If I get your question right, using the ideas of others without their consent is not influencing but plagiarism.

Lenin / Thomas it could also be seen the other way that others are influencing you with their ideas and suggestions, not necessarily plagiarism - Unless you don't credit them with their input, after all it is a team effort.

Gordon, agree.

When I learn how to influence / motivate I can better recognize when I am influenced / motivated by others. It is interesting then if I can accept being influenced or if that induces some bad feelings in me (my ability to learn, my own self-esteem).

I tend to see us, each human, as the result of several influencing spheres like parents, spouse, family, religion, school, military, community, nation, job, hobby group etc. from each of which we adapt cultural behaviors. All together they constitute our free will.

Motivate is within the project duration, like motivating team members to do their assigned tasks succesfully, while Influence goes beyond the project, like influence team members in their personal life or professional career.

Adolfo;

I believe influencing others is also key during the project. To be a successful PM, one must learn how to influence others (i.e. key stakeholders) as there are many competing and conflicting requirements.

So i can understand this for myself in a simple manner like motivation is self interest or pushing an individual to achieve whereas influence is a high level skill for driving someone in a particular direction.
