Experienced project managers have a sixth sense (a.k.a. spidey sense) when it comes to foreseeing a potential crisis. What are the key patterns you have learned to watch for?

As soon as someone tells me not to worry, I know I should start to worry.

When the project sponsor becomes disengaged, there's trouble on the horizon.

In addition to above mentioned by Wade and Steve,

In a matrix environment, as soon as a functional manager becomes less attentive/interested to the project than actually required to, a delivery risk can be foreseen.

My way of thinking (and believe me, I am in LATAM living in Argentina so crisis is our normal way to leave) is. there is not a crisis. There is a problem situation to solve with possibility of a highly undesirable outcome and the solucion must be understand from the point of view of the related opportunity.

Hi Sergio, for this question the context of crisis is: "a time when a difficult or important decision must be made."

However, I do like and agree with your response - paraphrased: There are no problems/challenges that cannot be understood and turned into an opportunity. This is definitely the way we should think as PM's. Thanks!

An empty or unchanging Risk Matrix is a key indicator to me that something is being overlooked.
