Getting into project management...take 46

There are quite a few threads from others in this forum on the theme of "how do I get into PM" so I thought I would add another one specific to my situation.

Hey - if you don't like the answer ask the question again a different way! :-)

I have worked in the IT industry for the last 25 years in roles that mostly have a sales and marketing focus. My employers during this time have were all tier 1 vendors or implementation firms.

That said, I have a computer science degree and worked "on the tools" in software development, albeit a long time ago. I have also done short courses on PM in the past and my document writing skills are very strong.

I have worked "around" IT projects for a long time and worked as a managing consultant for 3 years in the services organisation of a very large US software company. This role was mostly focused on driving the billable utilisation of a consulting team with a small personal billable target, mostly around stakeholder management on projects; formal PM work was not in the job description.

I have a pretty good general understanding of PM methodologies and excellent communication skills plus plenty of confidence and experience in dealing with senior people in companies of all shapes and sizes.

I also have a relentless eye for detail and structure that has not always been appreciated in the sales realm.......

I am keen to make a transition in PM work but like plenty of other scribes to this forum, am pondering how to make the transition.

Most people, if they were to look at my CV, would see a sales manager. However, I see myself as an experienced business manager, communicator and driver of outcomes with a strong technical bent.

What pragmatic advice would you have for someone with my background and desire to join the PM world as a practitioner?

Thanks
Barry

Hi, Barry

I see you as a Senior Project Consultant your experience speaks volumes. This is a role that is in demand and organisations are looking for people like you. In summary the role provides advise on solutioning and manages Project Managers and or Programmes in delivering portfolio of projects. Look into it. Update your Resume to reflect your competencies and do not focus on Sales.

Good luck
