What steps are involved in an internal kickoff meeting?

I work for a small company and we are starting to create processes. One of our problem areas is we start jobs but contracts hasn't entered them into the system. I wanted to start a process....an internal kickoff meeting....where the team, a member of contracts/accounting, sit in a room and get all the necessary information together. I know larger companies do this as part of CMMI. Can someone help me with the steps required and information needed for such a process please?
Thanks,

Bill, This phase of the project (activation/initiation) is a key aspect for any project. In larger organizations, PMO office along with the Asset Management group enters the required details about the project. Some of the tasks that I have partcipated in are as follows -
1) Project initiation questionnaire (online or manual) - completed by PM or Program Manager
2) The questionnaire is submitted to the Asset Management group where it analyzed and recorded and linked to Organization's budget management tool. This may not be automatic as the project budget will roll up into program, then division, department and finally organization.
3) Asset group creates an asset id that is used by the organization to track project's cost benefits and value to the organization.
4) Other phases will follow this phase where a kickoff meeting can be organized with the project team.
Before the project is initiated, it is definitely a good idea to conduct a project origination step where the business stakeholders formally signoff on the business case(s) and approve an initial estimate of the effort. Asset Management or Contracts teams usually like to see a Sponsor approval before initiating any projects.

You need to make sure that before you start the kickoff, the project has been authorized to start and you need a project charter as well. You need to have an agenda, list of 'must have' participants/invites, and logistics lined up (teleconference, videoconference room etc.) Saving Changes...
