If your sponsor comes out trumps in the political warfare , then it can greatly benefit your project.

Politics outside the project team or inside? Inside should be tackle immediately outside needs to be part of your risk and stakeholders analysis and management! But one thing is for sure your risk and stakeholders capacity needs to be very sharp if you are dealing with top height politics! Best of lucks

It definitely helps. Communications/business relations and politics go together like love and marriage, horse and carriage.

Corporate Politics are often the catalyst for the projects we manage and therefore should be embraced, as without it we would likely go hungry as project managers. Embracing doesn’t mean that you enjoy or like it, but instead - that we accept the nature and need for the beast and then create strategies for managing it.

I wrote an article this week that deals with this subject in a humorous off-beat way. It gives example strategies for dealing with politics, e.g. 1) a Defensive Posture secures opportunity for success, 2) Project Plumbing keeps waste from building up, 3) Time is a commodity, so make your purchase when the price it right, and 4) Identify and then empower your spies. You can find it on the Knowledge Shelf .

I like what Abolfazl stated, "Communications/business relations and politics go together like love and marriage, horse and carriage". Good analogy.

Negative or ego-driven politics is bad, but when we attempt to persuade stakeholders to increase the odds of project success, we are being political.

So long as the "what" and the "how" of the political action is in society+organization+project's best interests and not just ours and we are not crossing any ethical boundaries, it is justifiable.

PMs who go out of their way to avoid politics will rarely succeed with complex projects.

As long as there is money there is politics. Managing politics is all about managing relationships. External politics is often the catalyst for internal politics and obviously, they need to be managed differently. The one thing that can increase project complexity, amount of stakeholders is also the thing that is the greatest contributor to external politics and knowing your stakeholders will contribute greatly to your success in managing the politics.

Excellent answer. Within our organization (government) a good part of a PM's job is managing internal and external politics. Governments change, priorities change, people change, and projects can run for a decade or more.

Hi Shadav, Use politics to the advantage, and using it in the right measure is power, which is seldom known. It should not be used for the disadvantage of people. If you work on this premise, then mostly likely your project should succeed.
