An understanding that one is dealing with thought and there is nothing tangible at hand to back it up now so the credibility of the person who is proposing the thought becomes all important. Before believing those ideas they should believe you. So authenticity is one I will start with.

A leader that is known as a "thought" leader is not really a true leader. I prefer a normal leader, one who actually acts and not just thinks..! A real leader must share a vision, must make decisions, must communicate clearly, must empower, must lead by example, must serve, must facilitate colaboration, must be emotionally intelligent, must resolve conflicts, and first and foremost, must be a self-leader. Just thought won't do.

Thought leader should not be misconstrued as arm- chair commentator rather it is the one who is looking to the forest not just tree and that is the reason it is required to have a mental separation with a daily run of the mill kind of job.
