I'm conducting research for some upcoming articles on my Forbes.com site (Careers section). I'm a strong believer that project management isn't just for PMs and virtually everyone could benefit from PM skills and expertise. I'd love to hear your thoughts on the biggest mistakes project management mistakes that non PMs tend to make. What have you observed?

In the area of fundraising, failure to identify their stakeholders when soliciting items for silent auctions. You can have the best items to raise money, but are the prices feasible for your alleged targeted audience.

I agree with Kiron, poor planning. Also, poor budgeting. For example, buying land (in millions) as part of project, but forgetting to include "closing" costs associated with the purchase.

Creating estimates on the amount of work and costs needed without researching first is a huge error. If you are a non PM, how would you know how long it takes to perform a task or the cost? Market research, connecting with SMEs and being realistic when planning assist greatly in meeting the project's goals.

Forgetting about the long term. Without a solid idea on how to accomplish the whole project it is hard to follow a consistent path because there are always obstacles on the road which makes you to change the course. However, too much of a course changing may end up in loosing the course completely.
