Process improvement rests on a foundation of people who are open to change and the uncertainty it implies, open to objective criticism of "their" processes and performance. Whether the approach is Lean, Six Sigma or Lean Six Sigma, the practitioner or change agent must cultivate for him/herself and for the "change-ees" an open mind and the ability to be mindful. An open mind means one free of bias and unhealthy mental models. To be mindful is to be consciously aware, objectively seeing things as they are, moment to moment. Both open-mindedness and mindfulness can be cultivated using simple but powerful techniques as taught in my workshops, and publications.
