For the project success, what are the real contribution of Manager, Sr. Manager or Senior Management?

Just to take your views on the project to be successful, what are the real contribution of Manager, Sr. Manager or Senior Management? when PM and sponsor already exist.
I believe there will be a lot of overlap between their activities directly or indirectly Is this trend can be avoidable and how?

Hi Ramakant

If you are talking about "Manager" in a matrix organisation who is a key stakeholder in the project , then yes, their engagement in the project in terms of timely provision of support and Staff to your project is paramount to success of your project .

If Senior Manager or Management are part of the project steering committee then yes , their oversight , guidance and support is absolutely essential for the success of your project.

If the PM is reporting to the Senior Manager then as a line Manager, the Senior Manager is accountable for the success of the project too.

On the other hand if your question refers to a particular scenario then you need to provide more elaboration.

Thanks for your views, I am asking in a general point of view in the matrix organization. Also, each and every stakeholder is important for project success but there should be a unique contribution as per position and experience. otherwise, KPIs not defined properly as per my view.

First of all you need to define what project success meant. Defined objectives/goals of the project are the meassure of success. Then, everything or everybody that contributes to that are important not matter the position inside the organization. Usually senior leadership are the owners of the organizational objectives which are the reason to initiate projects.

Project success is meeting project objective in all aspect i.e. timely delivery by meeting quality and planned profit and meeting organizational objectives and If these objectives are achievable / PM is capable to achieve this then is it necessary to have Manager or Sr. Manager in that project to just share the summary report to the sponsor or CEO of the company? I have come across/observed this type of scenarios in some projects in some organizations and PM silently do his work to have good stakeholder relationship.
