Managing fixed price software development projects profitably requires specific project management skills. Does anyone know of a consultant/company that provides training specific to the challenges of managing fixed price projects? Thanks.

It takes more than well honed project management skills. It takes well defined scope and outcomes. The focus must be on delivery as contracted with the understanding that deviations from plan (dates, resources or scope) will be subject to changes in the contract price. The PM process must be such as to detect even minor deviations from the plan. Having done most my projects on fixed cost basis I can honestly say that it can make or break you financially.

Hear, hear!

I can't recommend a provider, but I would look hard for PM classes with titles that include:

Scope

Deliverables/Outcomes

Estimating (a real biggie)

Change management

Once you find a class with a good title/description, check out the provider's credentials.
