Hello Dora,
This is a very interesting Topic .Team building activities will help to develop a more cooperating environments and emotional intelligence (Self aware) as well will help . Every team member is different some members like to be monitored and some others like to be left alone and not bothered as long as you give them a deadline . I think appreciation and empathy always wins and make the team more responsible towards finishing their assigned tasks .

You can not coach people about something you do not have knowledge so you only can coach people about project management (talking about project manager as a coach). Is that is the case then you can apply those techniques.

Thanks sergio. I think we need to do some distintions
1. Mentoing is helping someoe with something you know how to doit. in achieveing an skill
2. COaching is helping individualities and teams to discover theirselves and finding new views about theirselves.
I think you are talking about mentoring and not coaching.
If we are talking about true coaching, subject matter expertise is not needed as a coach holds up a mirror to the coachee. If you are speaking about mentoring then that is where domain expertise is needed. Regardless, PMs will often find themselves having to adopt both stances whether that be with team members or with other stakeholders.

thanks. we need to have clear distintion about mentoing, coaching and therapy. If we are takking about coaching we need to work with the indivduality or team in discoverer theirselves and having new insights. As a project manager you can play both mentor or coach.
The most important thing you can do as a coach is help people think differently. To learn more about it, read David Rock's "Quiet Leadership".
Any coaching or mentoring has to be based on trust. Trust can be built by exposing ourselves at a personal level.

agree with you that trust is a base in both cases mentoring or coaching, but it is mandatory about acting as a coach.

Hi Dora,
Indeed, a very interesting topic and dear to my heart as well.
I feel with every change management initiative, coaching is an important part of making sure the initiative is successful. Every time i started a new project, I've made sure coaching and mentoring are part of the approach. Most of the times i learned people are resistant to the change which is, i guess, just human nature. But getting involved and open up to understand the challenges, helped me overcome the resistance and transform the opponent in a partner. And it worked every time.
Obviously, the techniques used need to be adjusted and require great communication, trust, confidence and creating an environment where people feel valued.

I also consider that in a PM dailybasics relationships with the team members ,coaching techniques can give you a different perspective about your team and creates a safe environment for improving performance and project results as a whole
