Unfortunately, not all managers are leaders. Some managers have poor leadership qualities, and employees follow orders from their managers because they are obligated to do so...not necessarily because they are influenced or inspired by the leader. Unlike managers, leaders are followed because of their personality, behaviour, and beliefs. A leader personally invests in tasks and projects and demonstrates a high level of passion for work. Leaders take a great deal of interest in the success of their followers, enabling them to reach their goals to satisfaction.

Hi,
I am trying to give you the answer, in very short:

Senior level management actually want the progress status of the report. Leadership style is varying person to person. It's actually depends on self characteristics. If you are a project manager your role will be very proactive. Because you are the key person to monitor & control the project. Project team leverage the work as per their capacity with team velocity.

Senior management is also very proactive & rely on project manager as per their communication to track the project. They are also very senior leaders who have a vision on the organization strategy goals & they are also the remover of major road blocks if persists.

As a project manager he/she should know the organization strategic goals. Because that is the only key reason your project is selected. It's often call the benefit management plan driven by senior management or senior leaders.

There are more than 10 leadership styles, 5 major conflict management rules, negotiation management & people management also discussed in PMBOK.

Leadership helps entire team to grow. It's a responsibility and not an authority unlike management.

The one thing I could never understand and never will is how in a successful company you could have managers with no leadership skills 'leading' teams. In my opinion, a manager is only applicable to the unskilled labor market, and even then it is dodgy. A 'manager' without leadership skills should never ever be in a management position.

valid question raised by Anton. A company having managers with little or no leadership qualities is doomed to fail.

You can learn management if you have the right background, a lot of discipline and will. Leadership is something you're born with. It can be shaped, not acquired.

A leader is a cowboy riding in front of a herd of cattle. You know he's the leader because the herd follows him.

A manager is a cowboy with a cattle prod, keeping the herd together. You know he's the manager because the cattle bellow in pain when he corrects them.

Both leaders and managers are necessary. On some projects, they may be the same person, but I find this to be rare. Also, it's not a good idea to actually tase your project members, that was just a metaphor.
