Ideas for Academic Paper

To fulfill certain requirements associated with teaching in a university, I am looking for ideas to publish/present a paper in an Academic conference (slightly different from Practitioners' conferences).

I will have a University Structure and potential partners to work with. But need new ideas on topics. Could be related to Project, Project, or Portfolio Management in organizations. What do YOU want to see some research about?

I searched on "Papers" in PM Central. I did see some related questions that others have posted (though not very recently), but not a lot of answers. Hence posting again.

My recommendation is that you try a subject that you have experienced in any facet of your life, maybe you consider it trivial but when you stop to study it you will discover that it is really interesting. Then it comes into play to relate that topic to an area of knowledge that you are passionate about.
You'll also discover flaws and it'll give you a chance to improve on the flaw.

Academic papers are usually based on empirical data. Is your plan to come up with the topic then gather the data? It might be easier to go the other way: find existing studies that give you inspiration. Even PMI has regular surveys that cut across the whole of the project management profession.

Yes, the plan is to setup a hypothesis on a certain topic and then gather data to prove (or disprove) it. I don't think I am following how to do the reverse... are you suggesting that I look at existing studies to get ideas for topics?

That's correct, Samuel. Of course, the data might be too specific to the author's intention but it can at least give you alternate ideas.

Remember than adults work and learn best by association.

My suggestion would be to pick a topic you are passionate about. A well written paper that other people will find relevant and insightful will take a lot of work. You can spend all that effort to please other people, or you can use that effort to enrich yourself in the process. If you are going to commit yourself to spending the time, make sure it is worth more to you than checking the box. Find your own value and get the most you can out of it personally.
