Having worked for a wide range of organizations, being a contract PM, I wonder if someone needs to categorize projects, for the PM, considering a project. What I mean by this is that the job descriptions are rarely correct maybe being written by HR, the staffing firm doesn’t really understand, the client isn’t being truthful or self-aware enough to fully represent the aspects of the project. You can do all the research in the world up front but still not get deep enough to decide whether the project fits your skill sets.

It would be what resources do you need and what resources do you have in order to complete a specific project. If its a case of I like this project over another project because you can use certain sets of you own skills, then this is a personal choice but in all organisations projects should be implemented based on priority and its up to the Project Manger to ensure their is no resources scheduling conflicts. As regarding fleshing out the requirements of a project to define scope, charter and objectives then this stage must be realise after a business case is delivered that gives a broad view of possible resources required. Projects are already categories by budget size, methodology applied, Industry, and project team size to name just a few so anymore categories one would have to apply a filter just to make sense of various labels applied.

That's a good point, Larry. A lot depends on the point at which they are hiring the PM - if it is before the project has started, other than the highlights of the business case, there might be little more than a ROM available. If you are replacing an existing PM, you'd likely get a lot more specific info.

I tend to use gig descriptions as a broad filter but give priority to the intel I get through a face-to-face conversation if I'm invited in for an interview.

What does mean"the project fits your skill sets"? If you are a project manager and your skills are aligned to the way the organization which is running the project follows then your skills will set.

What I'm getting are the tasks, the responsibilities, and the associated effort, that the PM is expected to undertake, that's not spelled out, talked about, up front by the client, prior to the PM taking the job. If there's a Truth in Lending Law and a Lemon Law I would believe contractors are owed an honest assessment of the position they're considering. So to your question Sergio, what does "the project fits your skill sets" mean. It's a determination by the contractor whether or not they are capable and/or compatible with the position. Make sense?
