It is good as a PMP to be knowledgeable in which ever tools that is used by your organization, be it Microsoft Project or Primavera P6. The more tools a PMP is familiar with the better, because it provides an edge in terms of one of the forms of power described in PMBOK Guide V6, Section 3.4.4.3 (Politics, Power, and Getting Things done) which is Expert Power. (Skills, information possessed; experience, training, education, certification.)
Among the types of power described is Positional (formal or authoritative), Informational, Referent,Charismatic, Coercive and the list goes on and on please see Page 63.
Expert power is one of the best forms of power.Expert power is earned on your own.

Is it required? I hope not since I have gained no knowledge of P6 in my twentysome years as a project manager.
Is it useful? Absolutely. Every tool is a different expression of a knowledge area. You can actually improve your own knowledge by being exposed to these different expressions. Saving Changes...
P6 is a very powerful program and having strong knowledge of PM tools will never hurt you applying for jobs. Whether or not you ever use the tool yourself may be an entirely different matter. It is such a powerful tool and can handle such immense projects that it can be impossible for the PM to do all the detailed scheduling. In that case the PM would only need high level knowledge, and support staff might be responsible for the data entry and tool management. Saving Changes...
