Hoping for advice. We are looking for a way to do the following and can't figure out software: we want to create a new project with a few pieces of information like primary stakeholder ,start date, description, and project manager. and we want to be able to enter daily or weekly updates. Most importantly, we went to be able to help put a report with the metadata and only the most recent status update. we have a homegrown Microsoft Access database for this, but it is quickly becoming too difficult to maintain and keeps breaking. Thanks for your advice. Budget for it is questionable, not out of the question, but may not be feasible.

MS Project will do that. Or chose any of the Gantt chart tools online, such as Smartsheet.

I am using VisualWBS along with Microsoft project to provide sponsor with a visual project status. He can easily understand the status of the project with at a glance look. That status data update is automated with an import from Microsoft project. Watch videos at VisualWBS.com

If there is no big project porfolio on place and your request if simple, than MS Excel should do the work. No initiate costs needed.

It appears that Lukas understood Carl's requirements.
The MS Project does not fit Carl's "quietionable budget" since you need to invest at least $10,000 in hardware/software/network bandwidth to implement it. Plus license fees for each person. Plus cost of administration or MS Project/SharePoint administrator.
Jira has a Project Management module that you might be interested in - try it for free.
You might look into Zoho Projects, Wrike, Planview or Asana as alternatives.

If you're not planning on using a lot of the features of MS Project, have you looked into SharePoint or Excel and Power BI?
