It is a known fact that a well motivated team can achieve anything. This assumes that there is a well-motivated project manager that instills enthusiasm into the team. But who / what motivates a project manager ? I would love to know thoughts from this community, what motivates us as project managers

Indeed a great question, Priya.

A project manager sits between the team and the organization and has to balance requests and capabilities. He/she might feel very lonely and this could be a reason why they look for a community of peers like PMI. At least they are understood there, see the commonalities between companies, learn some tricks and can experience some empathy and respect. This was the main reason I joined PMI 27 years ago.

What motivated me to become a project manager was that I understood that my personal growth is with human interactions, which will be basically the same for my lifetime, so I looked for something stable. Coming from technology, I understood that it will change quickly and I will not be able to use much of my expertise after 20 years, in big contrast to dealing with people.

Any - any - problem in projects, programs and PMOs I solved by talking with people, understanding people and influencing people.
Hello Thomas,
PMI Global Conference 2015, was a turning point in my career as a project manager, a time i was going through a low phase. I met such great project managers across the globe, i understood the power of networking and since then learning continues. Truly to say it is in communities like this i have to quote you .. "learned some tricks and have experienced some empathy and respect".Thank you !
Regards,
Priya

I do not agree that a PM must be motivated to get a well motivated team. We are professionals and we need to go for the objective because we accept it then if to motivate the team will help then we need to do that no matter if we, as PM, are motivated or not. Returning to your question the same that is applied to motivate the team could be applied to motivate the PM taking into account the Masslow Pyramid which is the tool I am using from years and it works for me. More about that: the interesting thing, at least for me, is lot of times as a PM I am located in one level on the pyramid while the rest of the team are located on levels too far for me on the top while others are located far from me on the bottom.
Thanks Sergio for your response. Maslow's hierarchy of needs it is !

A good PM must be self-motivated. It is the essential quality imbedded in the authentic nature of our being. We must be real in other to appreciate and feel motivated by the project moving successfully and even when we encounter some constraints we are still motivated to find solutions to some of our challenges within the project. Through PMI we can bring forward in a forum like and seek to discuss risks, constraints, and solutions to many of the problems and challenges we face on our projects as PM. Our resources are limitless, casting away fears of the unknown and knowing that the universe will deliver our good, we must continue to rely on each other irrespective of where in the universe we reside and work. Remember 7 Keys to Project Leadership:" Be Authentic, Lead with Vision, Improve and Innovate, Empower the Team, Get Close to Stakeholders, Establish a Solid Foundation and Work with Intent." Be Real. When you can not think of a solution. Meditate first. The Universe will deliver the solution.
Thank you John for your response. Self motivation is the key, but there could be situations where we might go through a low phase, in that case peers and forums like these keep us going

1001 different things. Motivation is a very subjective personal thing. In business, as in life, we all strive for something and what motivates us to get there is never the same.

Hi Priya,

Thanks for the question and to be honest i feel that it's the human connect and sense of responsibility that comes along with the role that motivates me the most.

Its give me opportunity to deal with a new challenge daily by learning from other's experiences and also by self learning from past experience.

The real motivation is also when I learn the importance of communication in personal and professional life which can make or break things :)

A project is normally for a extended period of time and can be away from a project managers home country, their family and friends. As a result a project manager will decide on a project that they are interested in, that is their in their area of expertise and skillset, that will also test them and develop their existing skillset and that they believe they can add value to the project. As a result a project manager goes into the project with the mindset on a positive footing. Seeing a project through to completion especially when you have gone through all the phase of a project is a motivation factor in itself and project managers have a mentality of not going to beaten and of not wanting to fail on a project and the risk of failure is a motivational factor for a project manager.
True, sometime we get so attached to a project it almost becomes as a part of a personality. In order for a project manager to stay motivated about a project then he or she must be truly interested in the project at hand in order maintain a high standard and not just want to see the project over the line.

Motivation is an important factor in achieving results on a project team but as previously said each of us are motivate by different factors so in the end of the day it is up to us to find out through experience what truly motivates and what environments are we best motivated in a ensuring we bring that into our daily lives. A good project manager can only bring us so far in relation to best work practises for a project management office.

A lot of overlap from other respondents...might have missed it, but did not see passion listed. I love what I do, holistically from the profession, strategic, and tactical perspective. I also love the people I get to work with and the relationships built throughout the project. Such a rollercoaster of events, discoveries, problems, solutions, etc. You get to watch the entirety of the team grow during the project.

Ideally, PM should be self-motivated. this is a general understanding, However, at the end of the day, PM is a human and he/she definitely needs a motivation.

PM can get motivated by,
(1) External ( Mostly self-driven): Networking, learning a new idea, new management technics, etc.
(2) Internal (Mostly within the organization): and Recognition from the people around him like Team members, PMO, etc

Thanks,
Praveen

Hello Priya: Since we are all motivated by different things, I can only speak for myself. My motivations are the joy of working with a team, the gratification of meeting milestones, the fun of learning, the support of business owners, stakeholders and peers on this website or in my company and at the end of the day - it is the feeling of a job well done. Hopefully these genuine motivations translate to inspiration and enthusiasm for the teams I work with!
