I know a large % of PMP are from IT related industry.
You may learnt this inside your company.

I work in Information Technology and learned about the PMP first from working with other PMP-certified project managers in my organization. The impetus for getting the PMP certification was that I found myself managing more projects and felt that dedicated time to learn more about project management would be beneficial (especially because I was working in a PMIS and did not understand some of the terms and concepts it used). So I would say that being around other PMP certified project managers influenced my decision, but primarily it was the recognition that having a body of knowledge I was well-versed in could save myself (and the stakeholders I work with and will work with) time and resources (i.e., work more efficiently and proactively) while creating a better experience for everyone engaging in and interfacing with the projects I work on (and also be able to speak the same language as fellow project managers). Here's what I think. The IT industry has involved large, complicated projects that required some sort of management discipline to complete successfully, and the PM body of knowledge arose as a way to structure that discipline. The PMP certification grew out of that, as a way to determine whether project managers grasped the body of knowledge (not as a guarantee that they would be able to manage large projects to a successful conclusion). My experience has been similar to David Duckett's, although I haven't worked as an IT specialist and the projects I manage are much smaller. Saving Changes...
