How can the project charter be used during completion of project work?

To be honest I have never used the project charter during closeout of a project but I can imagine that there is a possibility that it can be used as a baseline comparison? This is after all the document that authorized a specific budget towards a specific (set of) goal/s so it should be a good yardstick of where we initially thought we were going. But usually, the project plan plays a more active role.

A well drafted 'Project Charter' has 'Project Deliverables' and 'Success Criteria' sections besides others which are worth and must to be revisited towards completion of project. This provides a true picture of committed vs actual deliveries and also whether the execution of this project helped the customer in achieving their business goals.

If you don't have a separate document that clearly identifies the Project Acceptance Criteria, then your project charter can be used for that purpose.

If you have to use the project charter at the completion of the work then you have made something wrong except the only deliverable related to project you have created was the project charter.

In the simplest form the Project Charter could be used as a gap analysis. 'This is what we set out to do' versus 'this is what we did' Objective compared to outcome.

Could also be useful in a Lessons Learned exercise. 'This is how we expected to do it' versus 'this is how it got done'. What have we learned and how can we apply it going forward.
