So apparently I’m behind the age. I used to think PhD is always on a research basis.
I just learnt that similar to taught master, there’s actually some taught doctorate degree. But mostly exist in the business school, like DBA, or education school for those education doctor.

How about your country? Is this also happening too?

I never heard of a fully taught Doctorate Degree. There should be some sort of research for the doctorate degree unless I am mistaken.

I believe what you meant by `taught` is referring to coursework. PhD options include the traditional academic PhD typically 4-5years full-time, Industrial PhD which involves a company and a partnered university, Honorary PhD which entails receiving a PhD for a dissertation submission or a significant contribution to the field such that a university recognises an individual with a PhD.

On the other hand, people with over 10 years of working experience also take the option of pursuing a Doctorate of Business Administration with a specialisation. A variant to this is the Executive Doctorate of Business Administration catered to expose the experienced student to more executive level research. A DBA is designed to equip an individual to solve an industrial problem with academic rigour, and typical careers for DBA and EDBA graduates include management level industrial roles like senior managers and C-level. Whereas, a PhD is designed traditionally for an academic career or a specialised industry. Hopefully this helps to expand your knowledge on this.

I am Ph.D in Software Engineering earned in Cargnegie Mellon University. I am living in Argentina. Each country has its own rules about all related to Universities. In my country, were you have free of cost Universities and pay Universities, you have an entity which regulates everything related to bachelors, masters and doctorates. Then, it is not easy for Universities to put in place a course or training related to those levels of study. In other countries is not the same and the prestige level depends on the prestige level of the University. Get a Doctorate is hard but it depends on the schema used into each country. In general, you have to take a ranking to apply for the doctorate then you have to spend years making additional activities to earn credits and in the middle you have to crate a thesis with some characteristics then you have to defend the thesis.

Alex,

as in every area, change is happening based on demand. There used to be PhD programs which were meant to attract primarily students without working experience, as a final step of higher education.

As more experienced business people were searching for certificates also in the academic world, DBA was created for this market, building on professional experience. DBA is available in Europe. It incorporates research and academic/scientific procedures similar to a PhD, takes about 4 years, and results in less theoretical but more practice influenced thesis'.
