Talk about being good at maybe is easier for professionals, but what about talking about our errors as Project Managers and share some experiences that make our profession memorable becuase the learning and experiences we are achieving.
I am going always to remember that I was a new manager and I allow a person to work under my supervision without finishing the formal and legal hiring. One day the person call me and told she was in the hospital because an accident. I was really affraid of the consecuences, fortunatly the accident was out of work and the girld has the healty payments and was attended.
i have learnt that I need to finish all the formal hiring procedures before making people work for the projects and do not allow to get information about the project and organization before the hiring.

Nice topic. Being hesitate to have a strong action against some employees that are intending to resist the instructions in purpose as there was no support from the PMO.
Thanks for sharing. Consideribg change management and human beings

Tim, can you expand on this as I am unsure when qualifying your view if you are unsure, via an expert, is a bad thing?

Put another way, if in doubt ask - don't be afraid or too proud to ask for advice or help. This was a mistake I made early in my career and learnt greatly from it.

Dora, Thank you for bringing up such a great discussion topic. I have had many mistakes that I could list off and I try to learn from each and every one of those errors. A key mistake for me early in my career was not placing enough emphasis on the "people change processes" that must take place before taking a project live (be it applications, full systems or process changes).

Taking on too many projects at once because I didn't want anyone else to do them. Screwed up three projects at once. Know your limits and stick to them.

Lesson Learned 1: To influence and drive real change, you must connect and add value to others.
Many years ago I realized the hard way that it's imperative to play nice with people.
You shouldn't do everything yourself (make decisions, do work, receive recognition) and you shouldn't focus on climbing the ladder. The process really isn't more important than the people.
Be the ladder.

Lesson Learned 2: Initiation and Planning are the most critical phases of Project Success.
If you expend all your tenacity, energy, and focus in these phases, I've found that generally the result is a project is better managed by the project team and better understood and aligned to by all stakeholders.

Lesson Learned 3: Communicate the why, often and widely.
Never assume the stakeholders, organization, and project teams are aligned. To gain advocacy, you must consistently remind folks of the why. This build purpose and usually fosters alignment and tailwinds.
The method I created, prior to learning that communication methods are "a thing" was: Awareness - Education - Alignment - Advocacy

For me early on it was complacency. It's very easy to fall into a trap where your controls and monitoring are going so well, that you get complacent and let the basics slip. Even the smallest project management tasks and activities all contribute to not only the success, but also identifying the risks and failures of a project as soon as possible.
thanks karl. I got your point as , being distracted by metrics , monitoring and control process and not really mitigating risk

Hey, yes - metrics can sometimes become a box-ticking exercise. Making sure actions are taken across various controls is key.

Trusting your sponsor.
You have to treat your sponsor as a key stakeholder with different goals and interest as your own. Understand and influence.
