You've Earned a PMP - Have You Seen the Benefits?

Hi, All,

How many of you saw tangible benefits shortly after earning a PMP? By tangible, I mean promotions, pay raises, increased bonus potential, etc.

I read somewhere that Project Managers who hold a PMP often earn, on average, 20% more than those who do not. My own experience doesn't bear that out, but I'm curious to know if yours does.

Good afternoon William, when I got the certification I didn't receive a promotion or pay increase, I think the company I was working on that time saw it as a plus. However that year I found a new job that really apreaciate the certification. Moreover 3 years ago my employee on that time said I hired you just because I was looking for a PMP.

I wouldn't say I realized benefits "shortly" after earning the PMP. But I'm sure that it got me noticed the next time I sent a résumé.

I think the claim about "20% more" may be a bit (perhaps unintentionally) misleading. The PMP is one of the most widely recognized certifications for project management, and it has strict education and experience requirements. So naturally you'd expect PMP holders to earn a bit more than project managers with less education, experience, or recognizable achievements. In other words, the PMP doesn't automatically make you worth more, but it helps to prove you're worth more.

In terms of the benefits you’ve stated, PMP did not make a big difference for me nor financially neither in career progression / promotion but it certainly added value in terms of Intangible Benefits which was great.

Since I have certifications as ACP, CSM, CAPM and Lean Six Sigma yellow belt beyond the acquired knowledge and self satisfaction, has not revealed any impact in my current job. I had a pay raise but was not related with any of this fulfillments, but only with my performance in my position. So sometimes the investment doesn't pay off at benefits level , only at knowledge level. Maybe in a near future who knows.

William -

as I attained it back in 2000, in the first few years after Y2K it was a differentiator in hiring situations as many candidates I would compete with did not hold it.

Now it is less of a differentiator and more of a barrier to entry if you don't have it in North American (and possibly other) PM hiring situations unless you have someone put your resume directly in the hands of a hiring manager.
