When a project is canceled resources must be released, which is the most effective way to communicate this to the team.

Normally in this cases some resources return to their original places, others sometimes a higher number of persons are facing unemployment, this implies dealing with different sensitivities because we are dealing with people of course.
Do you think the communication should only be made to the group or should be made individually? Or
That a simple communication of the event made to the team, saying what will happen to the project is enough and after that promote individual meetings with each element of the team to explain the situation and their future adapting the communication at each one personality? Saving Changes...

Alexandre,
I would recommend an in-person group meeting where you make the announcement and then follow-up with resources individually. In some cases, it may also be advisable to announce to employees first and then contractors independently (back to back).
An orderly shutdown of a project is extremely important, wherein documentation is created, and collaterals are archived, so as to allow a restart of the project if so called upon. This also provides some degree of closure for the resources who have invested much to this point. Saving Changes...
I'd agree with George. Do a short in person meeting to set the stage, break the news, and cover any FAQs and then make yourself available immediately after and over the next couple of days for any team members who would want to meet with you 1:1.
I'd also suggest offering to provide recommendations or evaluations for the team members to help them get their next gig...

Alexandre, as was previously mentioned, I also recommend a in-person group meeting, be transparent with the team members and after offer the opportunity to 1:1's and/or recommendation letters.
Allow them time to chew the news, and don't force them to undesired 1:1's or smiles.. Saving Changes...
