Same way as you handle any individual distractors in a team setting. Confirm that this is not just your own perception but is indeed a trait which is affecting the team dynamics. If so, then meet with the individual one-on-one if no one else in the team has the courage to do so...

In a team setting its all about getting the best out of people in order to achieve the desired results to the highest obtainable standard. In a team setting a Project Manager will have to manage many different types of personalities that can conflict at times. It is not the job of the project manager to change personalities types of individual but allow individuals to see a better way of doing something and adapt this approach to their work routine. If a persons trait is annoying but is not negative to the teams performance then I would just put up with. If however it does become a negative factor within a team then deal with it in a face to face meeting and cite documented examples of this behaviour and explain how it contributed negatively to the team. When a person is confronted with these examples of their behaviour in a professional workplace they will soon become aware of their behaviour and modify accordingly.

Narcissism originated from a story of a young man falling in love with his own image after seeing himself for the first time from a reflection. If you have true narcissists (clinically), then you need to consider re-shuffling your team as professional intervention is required!

But seriously, I interpret your use of the term to be more associated with selfishness. This is where a one-on-one is required.

Describing different approaches to a situation/problem and then asking the team member which is the better approach might be one way to starting a meaningful conversation. Sometimes the problem is rooted in the team member not aware of his/her impact … or it may be something going on with his/her personal life that is causing the member to 'act-up'.

Either way, always keep it focused on what is the task-at-hand or what is it that is trying to be achieved. The conversation needs to be interactive, but not invasive to the person's space. If you observe positive changes after one or more discussion, make sure you compliment the member.

Yes. Narcissistic people can be selfish, boastful, arrogant, lacking in empathy, and hypersensitive to criticism who could be dangerous for team at all.
Thanks for all of your suggestions.
