Hello.
The CP is the longest duration since you cannot eliminate any activity in it, and cannot be delayed. It is the shortest time since even if other paths are finished they will need to wait for the CP to be completed.

The key is what shortest time refers to. It is not the shortest network path through the project but is the shortest time to complete the full project taking into account all parallel paths.

For example, if I am preparing Thanksgiving dinner and the appetizers take me 1 hour, the dessert 2 hours and the turkey four hours, the turkey cooking path is the critical path but is also representative of the shortest time (4 hours) to finish making dinner.

Hope that helps!

When you do your schedule, you set up dependencies between your activites. These dependencies will show the sequence in which the activities will be completed to complete the project. The critical path will be the sequence of activites that has the longest duration, assuming all other activities are completed as planned.

The critical path's duration also becomes the shortest time in which the project can be delivered because if any activity uses more than it's lag time, it will push out the critical path and, therefore, extend the time when the project ends.
