Does anyone work in PM in the arts and museum industry? It would be my dream job to be a PM in a museum or cultural institution, and am wondering if anyone has experience in those types of settings.

Someone recently posted about what your dream job in PM would be. I have a background in art history and museum studies, but have taken a different route through education management and higher education/association project management. Someday my dream would be to be a project manager in a museum or cultural institution, but these organizations are sometimes insular and hard to break into. Any suggestions?

You might want to network with museum management professionals to know when opportunities arise and let them know of your interest and availability.

Andrea,
I have been a project manager in the arts and museum industry for over a decade now. I spent 6 years in the live theater industry, and six years working for a museum. I am now working for an organization that builds exhibits for trade shows, museums, education centers and corporate interiors.
It has been a lot of fun applying PM practice in these industries. I believe that the process is more technically challenging than in the construction industry; and it is completely different than in the IT industry.
Since most museums are not equipped to build exhibitions in-house, they contract them out. Consequently, there are number of firms that exist that to design and build for museums, theaters, etc.
This is a unique and challenging field, and one that I have really enjoyed. I'd be happy to share more thoughts if you are interested.

Hi Daniel, Thank you for your response! I had forgotten about exhibit fabrication firms as an option. I would like to learn more from your perspective too. Do you mind if I send you a direct message with specific questions?
