Some people posted lot of questions everyday. Those becomes spam in reality. I am not participating answering those questions. Mainly, because they posted just the question only.

I totally agree with you Sergio. There are many questions from a single individual on forum, that i guess either to get some attention or gain some points on the website. Some questions are just repetition , some are so primitive and basic (even in era of google). Whatsoever it looks so annoying when there is no serious efforts to keep the forum focused to real big and challenging issues of PM field, sharing and supporting the users with real Project life experiences, providing guidelines.e.t.c

I don't think it is limited to just questions. The comment sections of webinars are full of comments that simply say, "Thank you." That doesn't really add much to a discussion and may just be added there to collect points for the website. I can't keep the "Notify me via email when someone posts a reply" box checked when I comment on a webinar because I get hammered with notifications because someone has simply said, "Thank you," on a webinar I watched. It would be great if we got notifications only if someone interacts with our posts but right now it is all or nothing.

Fully agree with you @Anthony. I think the same just in this case I decided not include it at the time to write my post.

I wonder sometimes if users are just trying to earn another website participation badge.

Fully agree with you. I think the same. But as you know "all are innocent until proven otherwise" and this is a way of life for me.

If the choice is crickets (i.e. low/no updates) or spam for an online community, I'd prefer the former if it means the content will be thought provoking and encourages a healthy discussion among community members.

I'd agree with Wade that this is probably driven by a vanity metric such as a badge or influence score...

I'm on the fence as to whether it is to increase some metric like "influence score" or just adding content for the sake of new content.

Either way, like filtering email, I'm pretty good at ignoring things that don't involve me.

I agree @Keith. The problem, at least for me, is when I go to the forum and I see lot of questions from the same people and it is hard to me to find a discussion that could be interesting to participate due to I spend my extra time here to learn from people comments and improve myself.

Giving back through the creation of content is why I engage the platform. The gamification elements are there to encourage us to create the content, and for the most part, it works.

However, for some, the primary purpose is the competition aspect (e.g., obtaining headliner status, being a top influencer in a topic, or just pressing themselves to see how far they can go) and they may be predisposed to creating light content (sometimes spam based). For others, the primary purpose is to create content that provides value to others, and the gamification elements are a healthy sideline. I don’t think it is possible to have one without the other.

For the sake of the discussion forums, it may be helpful to remove the “Firestarter” badge (40 questions) and just keep the “Instigator” (10 questions). This would seemingly reduce the tendency for some to create an excessive amount of questions in a short amount of time.
