Hello, I am new in this and wanted some advice from experts or who already has experienced the certificates exam preparations.
I have been working in projects as part of the team not as Project Manager.
I would like to stat learning to enhance my carrier and work as PM later.
I am starting from CAPM certificate and wanted to know how should I move for.
At the moment I am reading PMBOK 6th ed.
Should I take the 23 hours course already and then apply for or I can apply anyway because there will be enough time in one year to try to crack the exam?

I am sure a lot of people would agree with me that PMBOK is not the most exciting book to read. It is a very technical book. With that said, if you are just starting to look through the PMBOK taking a CAPM prep course would be beneficial.

Good luck Rigels

With the exception if you detected that CAPM is required in the market where you are working my recommendation is forget about it and go for PMP when you have all needed to apply.

To apply for the PMP, you do not need to be a holding the title of PM as what matters are the actual activities you do so if they are PM activities and you have enough experience then you can go straight to PMP. Now that you are willing to do the CAPM, I suggest you apply first and meanwhile you take the course and study. You have 1 year after the application is approved to sit for the exam.

Hope this helps.

Hi Rigels,

I agree with our experts, for many practical reasons you should go for PMP...One thing to keep in mind is that the application process and exam will change quite a bit next year. If you already started your study program I would recommend taking the exam before June 2020.
In order to apply, you need to acquire 35 hours of project management education ( for PMP)
Good luck!

I cant go directly for PMP because I have never worked as PM. I am not eligible for that.
I have been part in development and customization team only.
I want to change my carrier path and try do something more managerial. And I would like to work as PM but my company doesnt help me with that. That's why I want to have this certificate to be more convincing and insist again to have that role. :)

Understood. As Rami said the PM job title is not required in order to take the PMP exam however, you do need to show a number of working hours in a project like tasks... Either path you chose to take you need first to obtain the project management education hours before you can submit your application. I hope it helps :)

Very clear. thank you.
Yeah. I think I'm gonna take those hours first.
At the moment I gonna finish a first read to the book and then take the course.
After I will ask better to what kind of document they want to prove working hours in tasks. :)
