Be afraid what you ask for (exposure in this case) as you just might get it.
The benefits are an opportunity for much broader and deeper feedback and (relatively) free marketing but the dark side is there is almost nothing which can be shared on social media which won't draw violent criticism from at least one individual.

Good point. A single person with an axe to grind can poison others against the project to the point that it causes the project to fail. I suppose one has to carefully weigh this this against the benefits of using social media in a project.

Dear Heather: Interesting this question that posed Thanks for sharing it Can we consider whatsapp a Social Media? And skype? I barely know twitter. You can create groups on Facebook and Linkedin
The main advantages, in my opinion, are: - Organize people in groups to analyze and discuss specific subjects. - Fast communication - Involvement of a group of people who are part of these groups - Share communications support images - Reach a large number of people
The main difficulty is communication Consequently, any possible conflict that may arise. Often the receiver decodes the message differently than the sender intends to transmit
I personally don't like the excess of advertising and promotions that are made on social networks.
There are, of course, other advantages and disadvantages that may come to me as I reflect on this topic. I will definitely have the opportunity to read other reviews that will enrich my perspectives Saving Changes...

I literally wrote the book on using Social Media for Project Managers (published by PMI) but for the second edition we changed the title to Collaboration Tools for PMs - because there was less and less evidence that social media tools e.g. Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn, etc were being used for managing interactions between teams, because the PM software industry caught up. Now many tools have social media-like features within them e.g. discussion threads, sharing, liking, creating teams.
So... what do you mean by social media? And do you mean for networking and professional development or do you mean the actual work of delivering a project and managing team collaboration? Saving Changes...

Some benefits of the social media is speed of communication with a large amount of stakeholders, information sharing, information gathering but one of the downfalls is the human factor disconnect as people get carried away and forget that they need to talk to each other because without this, you can build a solid relationship. Using social media could certainly be helpful but it has to be governed properly. You need to know what information you are sharing on social media. Posting pictures of a Project Kick off meeting would be a good exercise but for anything formal it would have to be communicated through more formal forms of communication (In person, email, town hall, etc) Saving Changes...

Our bank uses Social Media to communicate some changes coming to the bank. We try to use all forms of communication to inform and engage with customers. This has helped us spread the word of advancements they can expect, as well as interacting with these people to better our relationships.
Some downfalls I have seen/heard, is what we can and cannot communicate. We have to be very discrete in what we share due to regulations, and sensitivity. I have not seen our company use social media in a negative way, but without thinking, it could potentially cause a problem if done incorrectly. Saving Changes...
