Hi Kevin,

I do agree “things are changing”, but in my opinion things are always changing – So, whether it’s 2020, 2025 or 2030 project managers will be confronted with the same theme they have always been faced with, that is, how to stay relevant and competitive in the marketplace (whether that be their current positions or future endeavors).

So, in my opinion, the greatest challenge for a PM (now and in the future) is “continual personal knowledge growth.” Stated another way, we should never become complacent that our knowledge is adequate; instead, we should always be pursuing an increase in areas such as:

- domain knowledge (above and beyond the technical PM domain)
- agility in the face of change
- leadership and influence
- communication and collaboration
- etc.

Taking this route largely insulates us from “next innovation” based concerns. I agree we need to stay abreast of new technologies, but we also should keep our feet firmly planted in the present need.
Excellent comment!!!!!

The greatest challenge would be managing the increasing pace of change with leveraging our PM versatility to our organizations/team's' way of working and implementing tools/processes to reduce tactical/admin work so we can improve PM maturity, to allow time for increased collaboration/influence and building domain knowledge. (per George Foreman's prior response to the question)

Securing cloud based SaaS, Internet of Things, coordinating with geographically dispersed resources, emotional intelligence will be a key asset, and being unflappable in your approach.

I agree that there will be unimaginable advances in technology and as a professional we have to not only stay on top but also anticipate. Changes will not only happen from one project to the next but within the project, Even a one-year project will have to adapt to technological changes between conception and delivery. We already see that. Both the project needs and the delivery methods will evolve. The PM will no longer be able to stop scope change but will have to effectively anticipate and manage the change.

However the greatest challenge will be as it is today - people. You deliver the project by managing the people - team members, stakeholders, clients, authorities, suppliers, contractors, bosses and worker bees.

He who best manages people will deliver the projects.most effectively.
