Which is the ethical way to proceed with a team member assigned to you that suddenly is not responding to your expectations? However, you find out that this person has gone through personal difficulties (a disease, a loss of a closed and dear person, a divorce, own complications, or another type). Do you try to understand it as a humankind approach? Or do you focus only on the goals and performance side?

Being considerate under the circumstances will help the struggling employee. Projects have a way of going sideways, and under these situations, hopefully the risk plan should provide guidance on next steps.

Have a conversation with the team member and try to determine the extent of the impact to the person and how long it may take for them to recover from the many challenges they face. Depending on the duration you expect the issue to last, the next step can be to reduce their work load and have other team members help, or discuss with the functional manager on options.

I agree with the comments stated above by my respected colleagues. My approach is to treat others the way I would want to be treated, to be respectful especially when others are most vulnerable but this must be balanced against the needs of the project. There may be times when someone who is hurting for personal reasons is no longer the best person for the project. That is when you as the PM and their functional manager and HR work together to best support the individual as well as support the needs of the project.

Gracias Sergio.
