While I am not new to the concept of PM, I am a recent grad and am trying to apply PM practices to our business. I am in need of resources and help in creating a tangible and usable short term and long term schedule for our boat manufacturing process.
You have questions, I may have answers, but I know I need help! Saving Changes...
- Are you developing a schedule for a new processes which must be developed as part of a project, or operationalizing a current state? The first is more PM-centric while the 2nd is more IE-centric using tools common with PM.
- Is the manufacturing process being developed in conjunction with the product development, or is it a mature product? This helps define whether or not there are phases such as prototyping, Low Rate Initial Production (LRIP), and full-scale production. Saving Changes...

If your production is custom made, the design and manufacture of each vessel can be approached as a project with two or three distinct phases.
If we manufacture the same ship repeatedly, we are talking about operations
There is a prefabrication phase that can and should be approached as a project

First question is: are you following PMI way to do project mangement? If so, then follow your defined project life cycle and you will find that schedule is derived from product definition and is impacted by constraints and assumptions that belongs to solution definition that, by the way, is outside project management scope of work.

Whether working Lean initiatives, Six Sigma, Root Cause Analysis or other flow improvement type projects, I often develop some type of current state process flow. The sequence of activities plus the durations can be translated into a schedule.
Do you consider that current-state definition outside the scope of the PM role, and that I'm performing the product team or systems engineer role? I would definitely see the development of a manufacturing process flow an Industrial Engineer or Manufacturing Engineer job role, but I could also see translating the flows into schedules as a PM job role.

Current state, if you are working about current state of the organization to define the solution that will help to go to the desire stare, it totally outside of the project manger scope of work. In fact, when current state is eliciting there is not a project in place. Business analyst is accountable for that and it is called "needs assessment" in the context of the PMI or "strategy analysis" in the context of the IIBA. But, it is up to each company the definition of roles and process to create solutions

Matthew, it is not clear what kind of help do you need. Yes, creating project schedule is necessary and I expect that your boat is not the only one that is manufactured. So you need to create portfolio schedule that takes into account existing constraints.
