Sharepoint has some good functionality, but it requires a bit of tweeking out of the box.

Hi Ronald, that's a very broad question. Software tools are usually best reviewed with the requirements in mind. Depending on your needs a standalone tool like MS Project or Project Libre might do the trick.

In enterprise environments where the need to track up to portfolio level may be needed then MS Project Online Premium, CA Technologies, or Plainview are all very good options to consider.

I suggest looking at the Gartner papers for a review of different tools.

It is not a given that the best project management tool is also the best productivity platform.

You could purchase a full-featured project management tool but don't expect to be productive until you invest time, training and sweat.

While I do agree that the best tool depends on your needs, my organization uses Teamwork Projects and are happy with it.

I'm currently learning how to use JIRA as my IT department that I work for uses this for their service desk.

Recently I've been playing around with the JIRA project functionality. I really like how you can assign tasks to people and how they can manage their tasks across multiple projects, services desks, and task lists all in one place for their individual dashboard. However, I'm having trouble visualizing how these tasks fit together or affect each other if a task is delayed.

I know JIRA has the capability to link tasks and create subtasks, but I'm missing the "gantt- like" view that other tools such as MS project use. Has anyone else used JIRA for project management? If so, I'd love to look through any references you have found to make this successful for you!

It depends on requirements.
The best project management tool creates the shortest feasible project schedule optimizing resource usage. This tool can save a lot of time and money for its users.
But it looks like today resources are not limited since resource constrained scheduling is rarely discussed.
