Hi All,

Being a new PM, I am thinking of doing one of the PM certification. I am not a coder/programmer, but I manage software/application development and website development projects with technical heads in my company.

May be time has come when I shall learn the core of PM.

Please suggest.

Thanks,
Donna

Hello Donna,

Congratulations on being a project manager.

I believe the most useful certification continues to the PMP offered through PMI (www.pmi.org).

With that said, have you thought about what your goals are as a project manager? Are there specific areas that you believe you need to be doing better for your projects to succeed? If you identify 2-3 areas for improvement, then you could post back or look for some training in those areas.

Hi Donna

Congratulations for new role to play. PM I think more than certifcation there are few internal skills to be developed. Project Management will not come all alone in one activity, PM needs to show the maturity in all the aspects of life. That's where you should concentrate.

I agree with Evan and would suggest the it depends on 4 main items in my view:-

1) where are you located (UK - APMP, Global-PMP, Global-Prince2, Global Agile-SCRUM) for project certifications/memberships.
2) What skills do you need / are currently lacking (e.g. Finance for non finance managers, Leadership (ILM), Commercial).
3) How much time have you got to commit (PMP & APMP will take a while to develop and build up portfolio wheras PRINCE2 is a 1 week (UK) £1K course)
4) Do you need certification or do you just want to learn the PM techniques firstly (from (2), there are many courses from Planning to EVM, pick what is relevant to your job first.

I was about to type this exact post, but it hits it dead on. It depends on where you are as much as what industry. I have friends who came from the UK into Canada with Prince2 and had no idea what the PMP was.

If your looking for a "New to PM" course/book I like Rita Mulcahy's "PM Crash Course". It is deliberately not aimed at the PMP or CAPM certifications but at getting a new PM up to speed.

Congratulations.

I agree. You need to identify what you would like to accomplish as a Project Manager and yes getting a PMP certification would really help along with deep exposure in project management.

You can start networking with the project management community by attending chapter meetings and webinars for a start.

Participating in this discussion board is a wonderful step on your part as well.

Based on my experience, I would recommend PMP Certification.

Like the other conributors,I think PMI's PMP should be your ultimate goal. You may wish to consider their CAPM certification as a stepping stone.

PMP if you are in the US! Check the Job Listings in your area, that is pretty much the only one I see around Orlando...

I like Tom's idea of reading the 'crash course' book to get you up to speed in your role ASAP as you pursue long term growth plan.

Good luck in your new role Donna!!!
