Mankind created technology to be constantly connected, social media is one of them. In 2018, the average time spend of social networking by an individual was 144 mins /day a 62.5 % increase from 2012. We miss out complete conversations, as we are too busy catching up on tweets, posts etc. There is always a sense of FOMO. The influence of social media on our lives cannot be ignored anymore. As a project manager, if we can manage our time, ourselves better, then we can manage our teams better.
Is it time to regain control of our lives from Social media ? Is it time for Social media detox ? If yes what are the potential pros and cons ?

Priya -

It's a question of mindfulness. As Elizabeth says, the upside of connectivity and social media is compelling but we need to find balance with everything else.

Every technology advancement brings with it the potential for abuse and this is usually experienced more within its first few decades. Unfortunately, mankind's ability to achieve appropriate usage lags far behind the innovation.

I find the increase in participation and interest in explicit disconnection events such as vipassana retreats to be one reasonable response to this challenge.

Thank you Kiron for your response. Social media Vipasanna it is :)

Social media can be good or bad depending on how you use it. Some people use it to escape from the real world (trying to see how many follower one can get, etc). It is real important for us to stop and take a look at how we are spending our time.

I believe the average time spent on social media has increased because it has been incorporated in our schools and workplaces. One should consider a detox if social media and the opinion of others online are dominating their thought process and debilitating one's real life.

There is no need for multiple platforms that is true, but can we get addicted so much to that one platform that we lose control of our lives ?
Do we need a detox in these cases ?
I think so. We can definitely get attached to that one platform. Sometimes it's good to walk away for a few months or so. I did that last year with Twitter.

Moderation is key, with anything and everything. Social Media, alcohol, exercise, food, etc. No need to move to extremes. Keep it simple, regulate it.
